Common GMC Issue: No Crank Does Not Start

Make: GMC | Model Example: 2016 Sierra | Avg. Mileage: 52807 | Job Number: 623861

Repair Issue:

No Crank – Does Not Start

Cause:

Master Electrical Component List

Customer Concern:

No crank. When the starter relay is bypassed the engine will not start and run. No Engine Control Module (ECM) DTCs. No Body Control Module (BCM) DTCs. No Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) DTCs. The scan data indicates a “Crank Request” is present. The “Starter Relay Command” is Off. The data also indicates the transmission is in Park.

Test/Procedure:

  1. With the key on, engine off, verify battery voltage is present on the Fuse F34 in the X50A Fuse Block Underhood.
  2. If OK, verify battery voltage present on the Fuse 32 in the X51L Fuse Block Instrument Panel Left.
  3. If no voltage is present, verify battery voltage is present on the Fuse 33 in the X51L Fuse Block Instrument Panel Left.
  4. If present, refer to the latest version of GM bulletin PIT5391*. Inspect the splice J308 in the left door sill.

Tech Tip

Other issues can be start then immediate stall, Service 4WD, relay clicking, rearview camera inop, and DTCs for Ignition 1 voltage.

Important Take-A-Way:

Most technicians will know to check fuses, and commonly say all fuses are good (which they are). However, this archive gives 3 specific fuses to check, which allows the technician to not only verify the fuses stated are good, but in fact that the fuses are in place and if one fuse (Fuse 32) does not have battery voltage, directs a user to a GM bulletin and directly to the likely splice where the problem is.

Most Popular Fix:

Replaced Starter or Repaired Splice J308
